Organize a Local AlterConf

Bring AlterConf to your city, gain event organizing experience, and make a meaningful impact on diversity in tech!

We look for local organizers who can leverage their knowledge of the community to:

  • Line up a venue and vendors to support the event
  • Find sponsors, speakers, and other event participants
  • Set up, run, and take down the event

The average total workload is 40 hours over the course of two to three months (the equivalent of a few hours per week).

We gift honorariums for your hard work. Typically, the honorarium is $400 (USD) plus a portion of any event profit.

Helpful Qualities

You don’t need any previous event organization experience to organize an AlterConf in your community. However, it is helpful if you have:

  • Connections in the local tech and gaming communities that you can leverage
  • Knowledge of the city, such as reputations of local tech companies
  • Interest in detail-oriented work and enthusiasm for event planning

 Organizer Responsibilities

Assemble a Team

It’s easier and more fun to work with a team! We recommend you have at least one local co-organizer, ideally more.

Find a Venue

Work with local tech and gaming companies or universities to find an accessible venue where AlterConf can take place.

Line Up Sponsors

Identify and reach out to companies to raise funds to pay speakers, pay for childcare, feed everyone, and more!

Coordinate the Event

Use our project management and event organizing tools as well as help from us to secure vendors, speakers, and more.

Invite Participants

Invite community members to apply to speak, freelance, volunteer, and attend to make your local AlterConf a success.

Staff AlterConf

Work with volunteers, perform setup and registration, introduce speakers, enforce the Code of Conduct, and clean up afterward.

 Resources

We provide a lot of support and resources along the way. You’ll work with the AlterConf team (AlterConf’s founder, Ashe, and AlterConf’s coordinator, Heather) in Slack, Asana, and a shared email inbox. We’ll share our tools, expertise, contacts, and infrastructure to ensure your success.

Specifically, we will:

  • Provide the event website and relevant tools (online application forms for speakers, freelancers, volunteers; a schedule template)
  • Share access to your budget and attendee list and work with you via our project management system
  • Aid in fundraising
  • Manage the event’s ticket sales and mailing list
  • Handle invoicing, payments, taxes, and legal structure
  • Provide US vendors for A/V, live captioning and video captioning, and sign language interpreting
  • Train you on our Code of Conduct and how to enforce it
  • Provide stickers, files for printed signage, and more

We also have a large network that will help bring in sponsors and participants.
