Marginalized people carry the burden of changing the industry to work for us. This comes at a huge cost from our careers and livelihoods. Asking us all to work remotely, join the whisper network, or take time to navigate the bog cannot be our silver bullets. Even then, doing all of the above isn’t a fail safe. I will share experiences where despite my best efforts, it was not enough to combat systematic biases. During my recovery, I found pockets of hope: Particularly well-run and thoughtful parts of the industry which give marginalized people the space to focus on the work. What might our tech culture look like if this were the norm? How do we bring these pockets out to be the expectations for everyone?
