Jonny Vu is the Regional Director, Chicago for General Assembly, a global training company focused on bridging the 21st century skills gap through our work with individuals, employers and policy makers. In this role, Jonny oversees the Chicago campus’ strategy and operations including admissions, courses, classroom experience, events, marketing, expansion, and instructional quality.

Prior to joining General Assembly in 2017, Jonny worked at Clear Channel in business operations. Additionally, Jonny has previously held roles at CrossFit, Corbett Accel Healthcare Group, GMR Marketing, and The Vu Agency. Jonny is actively involved as a volunteer for several Chicago organizations including Bright Pink, The Joffrey Ballet, and Chicago Ideas. He earned his B.S. in Business Administration and Marketing from University of Denver and an M.A. in Advertising and from The University of Texas at Austin.

Why the Workforce Needs Skills-Based Hiring

Tech’s biggest titans are calling for more talent to enter the pipeline at this moment. This session will explore skills-based hiring, an initiative to increase diversity in tech. General Assembly Chicago Regional Director Jonny Vu will discuss the hiring method, which ensures people of color and low-income background are offered equal opportunity. Using data, skills-based hiring identifies job candidates who can succeed, without regard to signals like college ranking or social network. Jonny will also discuss the dysfunctional barriers within the current workplace and how skills-based hiring can provide for a more diverse industry, with less turnover and happier people.
