We want to help you optimize for swag that will be useful, low waste, and cause the recipients to think fondly about who gave it to them. When in doubt, opt for small items of high quality that won't be immediately thrown away. Branding that is simple and understated is preferred by our attendees. Swag popular with our attendees in the past has included:

  • popsockets
  • public transit card holder
  • webcam covers
  • gender pronoun pins (she/her, he/him, they/them, ask me!)
  • good quality reusable water bottles or coffee cups
  • fidget toys (spinners, cubes, roller chains, tops)
  • tiny first aid kits
  • Chibitronics paper circuit kits
  • temporary tattoos
  • branded tissue packs, hand sanitizer, chapstick, lotion
  • weather-appropriate items like mini-umbrellas, touch-screen gloves, and mini-sunscreen
  • snack packs or other food items (being careful to avoid major allergens OR having a range of options with clearly stated allergens)
  • good quality notebooks (we recommend Field Notes!) and nice pens
  • screen cleaning cloths
  • cable clips

Swag should not include:

  • any material that violates the AlterConf Code of Conduct
  • gendered items or other items that make assumptions about the identity of the recipient
  • offensive or sexualized imagery
  • any items that can be questionably construed as potential digital security issues like usb drives
  • large or heavy items
  • items that would be difficult to take through an airport or through border security
  • tshirts and other apparel (sizing and styling for a wide range of body shapes and sizes is difficult to get right)

Contribute items to our lunchtime giveaway. Winners are randomly selected from checked-in attendees. Popular past giveaways have included:

  • gift cards
  • high-capacity portable external batteries, especially when they're pre-charged
  • a set of social justice-focused books or a subscription to the Noir Reads book box
  • tablets
  • raspberry pi or other single-board computers/microcontrollers
  • Lilypad sewable e-textiles kit

  • large or heavy items
  • items that would be difficult to take through an airport or through border security

 About AlterConf

AlterConf was created in 2014, borne from the need of a space to push past simplifications around inclusivity and beyond 101-level discussions of diversity. The conferences are not-for-profit and held in cities worldwide. Each AlterConf brings together marginalized people to critically examine the culture within the tech and gaming industries, while building strength and resolve toward a more inclusive future.

AlterConf gifts speakers an honorarium and works primarily with vendors owned by marginalized individuals. This means your sponsorship supports not just AlterConf, but local marginalized communities and their work.

AlterConf has a code of conduct which all sponsors, speakers, volunteers, and attendees must follow.

AlterConf was created and is organized by Ashe Dryden, one of the foremost voices in diversity and inclusion in the tech industry. Her long-form articles on open source and ethics, diverse engineering teams, and more are widely read and referenced. Her work has been featured in publications like The New York Times, Scientific American, Wired, NPR, and more. Ashe is a 2015 White House LGBTQ Tech & Innovation Fellow, is a prolific conference speaker, and trusted expert on diversity in inclusion who's been engaged for diversity consulting services with companies like Stripe, Heroku, Wikipedia, Asana, npm js, and Foursquare.
